Ag Leader Flow Meter Calibration for Better Crop Sprayer Liquid Valve Ratios
Ag Leader flow meter calibration sets the pulse value that the console uses to calculate liquid flow. When the valve ratios are tuned correctly, the sprayer applies the right amount of chemical per hectare. Silver Instruments supplies replacement flow meters and calibration support for crop sprayers in Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
Why Flow Meter Calibration Changes Liquid Valve Ratios
The flow meter on a crop sprayer sends pulses to the Ag Leader console. The console converts those pulses into a flow rate. If the pulse per litre value is wrong, the console opens or closes the liquid valves at the wrong time. A small error in calibration can cause a 5 to 12 percent overspray on a 200 hectare farm.
Most engineers skip this part. In practice, you cannot tune the liquid valve ratio without a stable flow signal. The Ag Leader system uses the calibration number to match the physical flow meter. That number is often entered during installation but not checked again.
Common Calibration Errors on Crop Sprayers
We have seen this on customer sites many times. A rice farm in Vietnam used water for the initial calibration. Then they switched to a liquid fertilizer with a viscosity of 18 cP. The flow meter pulse output dropped by 7 percent. The Ag Leader console still used the old water calibration. The result was under application on 40 hectares.
Another customer in Queensland ran a vegetable sprayer with a worn flow meter. The paddle wheel signal became unstable. The display showed a flow rate that jumped between 80 and 120 litres per minute. The liquid valve opened and closed too often. That caused pressure spikes and uneven spray coverage.
Here is a simple rule. Check the calibration number every time you change liquid type. Check it again after every 200 operating hours. Write the pulse per litre value on the tank or the console.
Step by Step Ag Leader Flow Meter Calibration
Start with the sprayer tank filled with clean water. Set the Ag Leader console to calibration mode. Run the sprayer at your normal working pressure. Collect water from one boom section for 60 seconds. Measure the actual volume in a calibrated container. Compare that volume with the value shown on the Ag Leader display.
If the displayed volume is higher than the actual volume, lower the pulse per litre setting. If the displayed volume is lower, increase the pulse setting. Repeat the test three times. Use the average value. This is not a one time task. Liquid temperature changes the viscosity and the meter factor. A 10 degree Celsius change can shift the reading by 2 to 3 percent.
After the flow meter calibration, adjust the liquid valve ratio. Start with a 10 percent duty cycle for the control valve. Run a short spray test. Check the pressure gauge. Increase or decrease the duty cycle in 2 percent steps. The goal is stable pressure with no pulsing at the nozzles.
Matching Silver Instruments Flow Meters to Ag Leader Consoles
Many crop sprayers use the original flow meter for years. When that unit fails, the dealer price can be high. Silver Instru

For small sprayers with 15 mm or 20 mm lines, we recommend the Silver Instruments MFE-15 electromagnetic flow meter. It provides a pulse output and a 4-20 mA HART signal. The meter body is 316L stainless steel with PTFE lining. The accuracy is 0.5 percent of reading. For larger sprayers up to 50 mm lines, the MFE-50 model works well.
We ship to dealers and end users in Thailand, Indonesia, Nigeria, Chile, Egypt and other markets. Send us your liquid type, viscosity in cP, pipe size in DN, flow range in litres per minute and operating pressure in bar. We will select the right meter and pulse setting for your Ag Leader console.
Tuning Liquid Valve Ratios for Different Crop Chemicals
The liquid valve ratio is not a fixed number. It changes with the chemical formulation. A glyphosate solution has a viscosity close to water. A foliar fertilizer with micronutrients can be thicker. A flow meter calibrated for water will not read the thicker product the same way.
So do this. Calibrate the flow meter with the actual product you will spray. If that is not practical, calibrate with water and apply a correction factor based on the density. For example, a liquid fertilizer with a density of 1.15 kg per litre will read lower on a volumetric flow meter. Multiply the pulse per litre value by the density ratio.
For the Ag Leader system, enter the corrected pulse value as the calibration number. Then set the liquid valve ratio to keep the pressure within the nozzle range. Most agricultural nozzles work best between 2 and 4 bar. A valve ratio that is too aggressive will cause pressure oscillations. A ratio that is too slow will not react to speed changes.
FAQ
How often should I calibrate the Ag Leader flow meter?
Calibrate every season or every 200 hours. Also calibrate when you change liquid type or replace nozzles.
What is the pulse per litre value for a typical sprayer flow meter?
Most turbine or paddle wheel flow meters output between 100 and 900 pulses per litre. The exact number depends on the meter model and pipe size.
Can I use a Silver Instruments electromagnetic flow meter with an Ag Leader console?
Yes. Our electromagnetic flow meters with pulse output connect directly to the Ag Leader display. You only need to enter the correct pulse per litre value.
Why does the liquid valve ratio cause pressure spikes?
If the flow meter signal is unstable, the Ag Leader console reacts too often. Check the flow meter installation for air bubbles or electrical noise.
What information do I need to request a replacement flow meter?
Tell us your pipe size in DN, flow range in litres per minute, liquid type, viscosity in cP, operating pressure in bar and the Ag Leader console model.
