Visual Flow Meter: Dial Indicators and Glass Tapered Rotameter Tubes
Quick Answer
A visual flow meter gives a local flow reading without a power supply. For air, water, nitrogen, and low viscosity liquids, a glass tapered rotameter tube is usually the most cost effective option. For higher pressure or remote output, choose a metal tube rotameter with a dial indicator and 4-20 mA HART.
What This Article Covers
We explain where dial indicators and glass tapered rotameter tubes fit in a plant. We also show what parameters you need before asking for a quote. The details here come from field experience in water, chemical, food, and oil and gas projects across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Australia.
Dial Indicators for Local Flow Reading
A dial indicator flow meter gives an analog pointer reading. The scale is marked in L/h, m3/h, kg/h, or scfm. An operator can check the value from a short distance. This style works well on fuel oil lines, cooling water returns, seal flush panels, and gas purge skids.
We supplied a dial indicator rotameter to a palm oil refinery in Indonesia. The line was DN40. The fluid was diesel at 35 °C. The flow range was 200 to 2000 L/h. The customer wanted no transmitter. They needed only a local pointer. That unit shipped with a SS316 body and a PTFE float stop. It has run without maintenance for 14 months.
Glass Tapered Rotameter Tubes
A glass tapered rotameter tube uses a float inside a conical borosilicate glass tube. As flow increases, the float rises. You read the flow from the printed scale. Because the tube is transparent, operators trust the reading quickly.
Standard glass tube rotameters handle up to 10 bar at 20 °C and about 90 °C for water. They are not designed for steam, thermal shock, or pressure spikes. So for those services, use a metal tube rotameter with a dial indicator.
Typical accuracy is ±2.5% to ±4% full scale. Repeatability is about ±0.5%. Rangeability is 10:1. Standard line sizes are DN15, DN25, DN40, and DN50. For demineralized water with conductivity below 5 µS/cm, specify PTFE seals and avoid brass wetted parts.
Common Application Choices
For analyzer cabinet purge air, choose a DN15 glass tube rotameter with a manual needle valve. A typical flow range is 10 to 100 L/h air. For cooling water loops, a DN25 glass tube unit with a SS316 float covers 100 to 1000 L/h. For diesel transfer lines, a metal tube rotameter with a dial indicator covers 200 to 2000 L/h at up to 40 bar. For hot water above 90 °C, use a metal tube type and add a PT100 temperature sensor if local temperature is part of the log sheet.
For seawater, do not start with a glass tube rotameter. Continuous salt exposure can scratch the float and reduce repeatability. A magnetic flow meter or a PTFE lined metal tube rotameter is a better choice for desalination plant brine.
Silver Instruments keeps DN15 and DN25 glass tube rotameters in stock for fast dispatch. Custom scales take 5 to 7 working days. A paint manufacturer in Vietnam ordered 12 units for nitrogen purge on resin tanks. They installed them in one afternoon. There was no transmitter and no wiring to pull.
Installation Notes That Matter
Install a visual flow meter vertically. The inlet must be at the bottom. The outlet must be at the top. Use a bypass line if the process runs continuously and you need maintenance. Most engineers skip this part, but installation changes the reading. Allow 5 to 10 pipe diameters of straight run upstream and 3 to 5 downstream.
For dirty water or raw river water, add a Y straine

Output and Remote Monitoring
Visual flow meters are local by default. A glass tube rotameter does not need power. A dial indicator can be mechanical or electronic. Electronic versions add a 4-20 mA HART signal for the plant PLC or DCS.
For alarm outputs, request two SPDT micro switches on a metal tube rotameter. These switches trip at high or low flow. This setup works well for seal water monitoring on pumps in chemical plants. Flameproof and intrinsically safe versions are available for ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2. Specify the gas group and temperature class with your inquiry.
Which One Should You Choose
If the application is air, water, or nitrogen at moderate pressure, pick a glass tapered rotameter tube. It is low cost and easy to read. If the line pressure exceeds 10 bar, the temperature exceeds 90 °C, or the fluid is hazardous, select a metal tube rotameter with a dial indicator. Add 4-20 mA HART when the reading must go to a PLC or DCS.
In practice, most water and gas utility lines below DN50 use glass tubes. Most oil and gas skids above 10 bar use metal tubes with dial indicators.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Can a glass tapered rotameter tube handle seawater?
For continuous seawater service, a glass tube rotameter is not the first choice. Salt crystals can scratch the float and scale. If salinity is moderate and flow is small, use a SS316 float and PTFE seals. For long term desalination plant brine, choose a magnetic flow meter or a PTFE lined metal tube rotameter.
Q2: What is the accuracy of a dial indicator flow meter?
A standard variable area dial indicator shows ±2.5% to ±4% full scale. The error is larger at low flows near the bottom of the scale. For oils above 50 cP, accuracy drops. We can calibrate the scale with your actual fluid to improve local reading.
Q3: Do these meters require straight pipe runs?
They are less sensitive than differential pressure flow meters. But you should still allow 5 to 10 pipe diameters upstream and 3 to 5 downstream. This keeps the float stable. If you have a control valve, place it after the rotameter.
Q4: Can I use a glass tube flow meter for hot water?
Up to about 90 °C and below 10 bar, a borosilicate glass tube works. Above 90 °C, thermal shock can crack the glass. For hot water, steam condensate, or thermal oil, use a metal tube rotameter with a dial indicator.
Q5: Which output options can I add?
Glass tube rotameters are local only. Metal tube rotameters can be fitted with a mechanical dial indicator, a 4-20 mA HART transmitter, or two SPDT alarm switches. Intrinsically safe and flameproof versions are available for ATEX Zone 1.
