Flow Meter Types: Comprehensive Comparison and Technical Engineering Selection Guides

Quick Answer: Use a Coriolis mass flow meter for direct mass, density, and high accuracy on LPG, chemicals, and fuel oil. Use an electromagnetic flow meter for water, wastewater, and conductive fluids. Use vortex for steam and natural gas. Use ultrasonic for clamp-on measurement on large pipes. Use oval gear for diesel and viscous fluids. Use thermal mass for compressed air and biogas.

Here is the thing. Flow meter selection is not about brand first. It is about fluid type, pipe size, flow range, pressure, temperature, and accuracy. This guide compares six flow meter types for industrial projects. It focuses on field conditions. Use it to shortlist models before you contact Silver Automation Instruments for a quote.

Coriolis Mass Flow Meter: Direct Mass for Liquids and Gas

A Coriolis flow meter measures mass directly in kg/h or t/h. It also reports density and process temperature. Typical accuracy is ±0.1 percent to ±0.2 percent of rate. The Silver Instruments CMF series covers DN15 to DN200 and pressures up to 25 bar. Use it for LPG, fuel oil, edible oil, chemicals, and batch dosing. A dairy plant in Mexico uses this type for cream batching because it needs exact mass and clean-in-place capability.

This meter costs more than other types. But it removes the need for separate density compensation on mass reporting. If the fluid has low conductivity or changing viscosity, a Coriolis meter works well.

Electromagnetic Flow Meter: Water, Wastewater, and Conductive Fluids

This type works only with conductive liquids. The minimum conductivity is about 5 µS/cm. Raw water, drinking water, sewage, sludge, acid, and caustic are common fluids. Accuracy is ±0.3 percent to ±0.5 percent of rate. The Silver Instruments EMF series covers DN25 to DN2000. Liners include PTFE, hard rubber, and polyurethane. Electrodes are 316L, Hastelloy, or titanium. Output is 4-20 mA HART, pulse, or RS485.

For a desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, we recommend an electromagnetic seawater flow meter with PTFE liner and titanium electrodes. For a wastewater plant in Vietnam, a rubber liner and 316L electrodes work well for raw sewage. Most engineers choose this type when straight run is limited because many models need only 5D upstream.

Ultrasonic Flow Meter: Clamp-On for Large Pipes and Quick Checks

Clamp-on ultrasonic meters mount outside the pipe. They do not cut the pipe and do not touch the fluid. Accuracy is around ±0.5 percent to ±1.0 percent of rate on a clean pipe. Pipe sizes range from DN15 to DN6000. Use them for chilled water, cooling water, building water, irrigation, and large raw water lines. The Silver Instruments USF series includes portable and fixed clamp-on models.

A paper mill in Thailand uses clamp-on meters to verify flow on large raw water pipes without shutdown. The downside is that scale and pipe wall quality affect the signal. Avoid this type for fluids with solids or gas bubbles if high accuracy is needed.

Vortex Flow Meter: Steam, Compressed Air, and Natural Gas

A vortex flow meter measures the frequency of vortices behind a bluff body. It handles saturated steam, superheated steam, natural gas, compressed air, and low-viscosity liquids. Accuracy is ±1.0 percent for liquids and ±1.5 percent for gas. The Silver Instruments VSF series covers DN15 to DN300 and works up to 250 °C. Use integrated pressure and temperature compensation for steam mass flow.

A customer in the Philippines uses a vortex meter on a packaged boiler steam header. He sends the 4-20 mA HART signal to a paperless recorder for energy tracking. You need enough straight run. Plan for 15D upstream and 5D downstream. This type is not good for very low flow or viscous liquids.
