Gas Flow Indicators: Highly Visible Local Dial and Pointer Registers for Gas Lines

Quick Answer: Gas flow indicators with local dial and pointer registers let plant operators read gas flow directly on the pipe without power or signal wiring. Silver Automation Instruments supplies these mechanical gas flow indicators in DN15 to DN100 sizes with options for ATEX Zone 1, 316L stainless steel wetted parts, and scales for air, nitrogen, natural gas, CO2, and biogas. Send your pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range to get a quote for your gas line.

How a Local Dial Gas Flow Indicator Works

A gas flow indicator uses a tapered tube and a float. Gas enters at the bottom and lifts the float. The float position transfers to a pointer through a magnetic coupling. The pointer moves across a large dial. Operators read flow rate in l/min, m3/h, scfh, or kg/h depending on the scale printed for the gas.

The local dial is highly visible because the scale arc is long. Many plants choose a 100 mm or 150 mm dial for pipe galleries and gas skids. The pointer register does not need power, loop wiring, or a PLC. In practice, this reduces failure points on nitrogen purge lines and burner gas supply lines.

Specifications That Matter for Gas Lines

We specify gas flow indicators by body size, connection, material, pressure, temperature, and scale. Common sizes are DN15, DN25, DN40, DN50, DN80, and DN100. Process connections can be BSPP, NPT, ANSI flanges, or DIN flanges. Wetted parts in 316L stainless steel cover most gas service cases. Brass bodies cost less and work for dry air or nitrogen in non-corrosive service.

Pressure rating is usually PN16 or PN40. Temperature rating goes up to 120 °C. The standard window is tempered glass. Seals can be Viton or PTFE. Accuracy for a local dial unit is typically class 4 per VDI/VDE 3513. That is enough for purge monitoring, blanketing gas, and leak testing. If you need tighter accuracy, you need a mass flow meter or a turbine meter.

Some units can include a 4-20 mA HART transmitter, two alarm switches, or a PT100 temperature sensor. In hazardous areas, choose the ATEX Zone 1 option without electrical output or with a certified transmitter. Most engineers skip the transmitter on simple utility gas lines because the local dial is the main indication.

Local Dial Flow Indicator vs Electronic Flow Meter

An electronic gas flow meter such as a thermal mass flow meter or Coriolis mass flow meter gives digital output, totalization, and remote data. A local dial gas flow indicator gives one thing: immediate visual flow confirmation. Here is the thing. For many gas utilities, that is exactly what the operator wants.

A customer in Vietnam last year asked us for a simple gas flow indicator for a nitrogen header. The line pressure was 3.5 bar, pipe size DN25, and flow range 10 to 100 l/min. We supplied a 316L stainless steel unit with a 100 mm dial and PTFE seals. The plant did not want power at the skid. The dial was readable from 5 meters away.

Electronic meters are better when you need data logging or batching. Local dial flow indicators are better when you need a mechanical check during startup, purging, or manual throttle adjustments.

Installation Notes for Gas Service

Install the flow indicator vertically. Gas must flow upward. A horizontal installation can make the float stick. Use a bypass line if the gas flow cannot be interrupted. Add a needle valve or a flow control valve after the indicator to set the flow. Put a filter upstream if the gas contains dust or pipe scale.

The dial face should face the walkway or the valve operator station. In gas skids, we see many indicators mounted at eye level between DN15 and DN50 lines. Larger DN80 and DN100 units need support brackets. Do not let the pipe weight bend the meter bod
