Turbine Flow Meter Principle for Low-Viscosity Hydrocarbons


Hydrocarbon liquid enters the meter body and strikes the rotor blades. The rotor spins at a speed proportional to fluid velocity. A magnetic pickup outside the flow path counts each blade pass. The signal is a square wave pulse train. Each pulse represents a small volume. The K-factor is the number of pulses per liter or per gallon.


For low-viscosity hydrocarbons the rotor can spin freely. Viscosity below 5 cP creates less drag. The meter output stays linear over a wide range. Gasoline at 0.6 cP behaves well. Diesel at 3 cP also works. Naphtha and light fuel oil fall in the same range.


Volumetric Sizing Steps That Work


Start with pipe size. Do not size a turbine meter by line size only. You need actual minimum and maximum flow rates. A DN50 meter may read 8 to 50 m3/h. If your minimum flow is 1 m3/h, DN50 is too large. Use DN25 or DN32.


Next check viscosity. Turbine meters lose range when viscosity exceeds 5 cP. Low-viscosity hydrocarbons usually pass this check. Heavy crude or lubricating oil does not.


Then check pressure drop and back pressure. Low pressure at the meter outlet can cause cavitation. Cavitation damages the rotor and ruins accuracy. Calculate the minimum back pressure. For hydrocarbons the rule is two times the meter pressure drop plus 1.25 times the vapor pressure.

What viscosity is low-viscosity for a turbine flow meter?
Hydrocarbons from 0.5 to 5 cP are low-viscosity. Gasoline, diesel, naphtha, kerosene, and light fuel oil fall in this range. Above 5 cP the linear range shrinks and you may need a positive displacement meter.


Can one turbine flow meter measure both gasoline and diesel?
Yes, but you must size for the lower viscosity and the wider flow range. Meter factor shift is small between 0.6 cP and 3 cP if the flow stays inside the linear range.
